I can’t describe how much my heart skipped a beat when I opened my suitcase to the smell of coconut! It’s a good smell but not the smell I wanted when I opened by case because it could only mean something bad… I was right about the smell, the lid of a travel size sunscreen oil I had in my hand luggage had popped open and leaked in my bag! :s
As I unpacked my case the damage unfolded! It had leaked over my navy faux suede shoes, three of my tops (one of which was expensive), slightly over my laptop and over my suitcase! I suppose it could have been worse but I absolutely hate my things getting ruined!
I huffed a little with myself because I had been so careless, especially with an oil product! After I finally got over myself I set about finding ways to remove oil the from my clothes and I was surprised at the solutions available so I thought I would share with you what worked for me.
What you will need:
- Baking Soda
- Fairy Liquid/Dishwashing liquid
- A basin
- Access to water
- Access to washing machine
What to do – The garment/s need to be dry
Step 1: Lay your garment on a table; sprinkle the baking soda over the stained area to absorb any excess oil there may be! Allow it to sit on the stain for around 30 minutes. If required flip garment and repeat on the other side.
Step 2: Brush off any excess baking soda from the garments, then rub dishwashing (fairy) liquid over the stained area and leave for 5/10 minutes to soak in and break down the grease.
Step 3: Fill a basin ¼ full of hot (not boiling) water and add a generous amount of washing powder/liquid. Add the garment/s to the water and let soak for 1 hour.
Step 4: Rinse the garment under hot water and wash as normal and hang to dry and hopefully your garments like mine will be oil free 🙂
Thankfully mine all came out squeaky clean, the shoes and the suitcase I am just living in hope that the oil dries out of them and they go back to some sort of normality! 😉 I absolutely hate when things get ruined so I am always glad I can find a solution!
Baking Soda has various uses: If anytime I feel my kidneys are sore I boil water, pour 3cm into a cup and add a tea spoonful of baking soda and let it fizz out. Once it is a drinkable temperature drink it in one go and a short while later you should feel some relief – this is by no means a cure and if you have a problem with your kidneys it is best you seek medical advice from your Doctor.
I hope you enjoyed my ‘life hack’ but I sincerely hope you never be in the situation I was in but if you do find yourself in that situation then you can refer back to this post 😉
